Henry Ward Beecher

The Opportunity
If you've ever thought about doing mission work or volunteer work in a foreign country, here is your opportunity. You can bring a smile to a sick child, some food to a hungry baby or put a dry roof over an extended family. You don't need lots of special skills, you don't need extended training, you don't need to learn another language. You already what it takes to accomplish much. You need a willing heart, the ability to sweat a little and a small amount of money. Worthwhile projects can be completed in as little as a day.

The Yucatan is close in distance to the USA and Canada, so that makes getting here easy. But the Yucatan is very distant in time from our familiar surroundings; many people in the small villages live almost exactly the same way their ancestors lived a thousand years ago...in thached-roof houses with three stones on the floor for the fireplace and a small round table...that's the entire kitchen for an extended family.

The Needs
The area surrounding Valladolid is filled with small Mayan villages where many services are lacking. Many of the men in these small villages work in the fields as subsistence farmers...that means that there is little or no cash income for the household. They till the soil just as their ancestors did...using slash and burn agriculture techniques. And making a hole in the earth with a sharp stick in which to drop some seeds. No tractors; no plows. And that means that such necessities as doctors and dentists and medicine are sometimes just out of reach. Roofs are often leaky thatch or treated cardboard or laminated asbestos. None of them stand up well to hurricanes or tropical rains. Because many of the people are subsistence farmers, they eat what they can grow. And if the crop is bad there may not be enough to eat. And even if the crop is good, there are many needed things that cannot be grown...that they need money to purchase...matches, soap, cooking oil, etc.
